Question - How do you reduce your company’s upward spiral to higher health care costs?
Answer - Get involved.
It's that simple, but for many reasons, most employers don't do it. They humbly accept their rate increases, shop their costs a little, grouse and complain, and, if they are lucky, talk their current carrier down a little.
Many employers receive their annual rate increases, and don't know what to do to combat the continuing skyrocketing of their healthcare costs. These employers continue down the same path year after year, saying things like, "My carrier takes care of that". In how many other parts of your business would you accept double digit rate increases year after year and do nothing about it?
Throughout the country there are many health plan success stories, and not one has included an employer relying on their carrier to take control of their health plan. Every success story involves the employer taking control, the employer realizing that what they are doing isn't working, getting involved, and taking charge.
Below is the CHP Care Coordination Model, which has a proven track record for reducing costs. The key is taking all available data, making it "actionable", and putting it into the hands of local clinical experts.
CHP Care Coordination
Every employer is different, so there's no "one size fits all". Success requires an ongoing collaboration and continuous improvement.
We start with data. We use data to determine where the problems are. You can’t fix something until you know what’s broken. We extract data from as many sources as possible to create a baseline for each employee. Any data repository can include medical and Rx data, but to get the most complete picture of your employees' health, we also take data from HRA’s, biometric screenings, LTD, STD, workers comp and on-site clinics, if available.
We create an action plan. A major step in reducing trend involves education and engagement. Your employees are most likely in their current situation due to a lack of knowledge and support. They need to be continuously educated and encouraged regarding the lifestyle choices they are making.
We provide on-site coaching. We’ve found that there are some people that respond to telephonic coaching, but it doesn’t engage the majority of the employee population. Our experience shows that providing a local clinical manager to meet regularly with employees on a face to face basis increases the success of disease management programs tremendously.
We track your employee’s success. Since many of the issues your employee's have are chronic diseases, tracking each employee's progress is an ongoing process. Chronic conditions tend to affect 20% of your population, but they typically make up 80% of your claim costs. By definition, chronic conditions aren’t usually cured, but with proper management and lifestyle changes, flare ups can be controlled, reducing health care costs significantly.
