About CHP

Our History

CHP was established in 1996 by several hospitals in the Upstate of South Carolina.  Local employers had been approaching the hospitals in an effort to find ways to work collaboratively to reduce healthcare costs.  The first two products that were established were fully-insured business products and a region-wide PPO network. 

The primary goal was to deliver competitive hospital pricing directly to employers of all sizes.  Some of the large managed care organizations were not passing on the full discounts to the employers.  They were, and still are, keeping anywhere from 10%-30% of the savings off of the discount, and adding it directly to their bottom line profits.  Once area employers became aware of this they began to look for alternatives, and CHP fit that need.

For over 15 years many employers with fewer than 100 employees have enjoyed the benefits of CHP’s fully-insured product line (plan designs, discounts and access).  Self-funded employers wanted a direct relationship with local hospitals and the CHP PPO network paved the way for that to happen.  In the years since, we have expanded our products and services to better serve the changing needs of employers of all sizes. 

The Present

The days of focusing on network discounts are over; see Articles of Interest.  When you look at the managed care companies that tout “we have the best discounts”, also look at their net profit and the cash they have accumulated beyond required State reserves, and more importantly their double digit premium increases they charge to employers every year.  

The Future

It’s time to move on to the challenge of reducing utilization, improving employee’s health, and measuring that improvement.  The way this is accomplished is by partnering with local hospitals and local physicians.  We often use the phrase “Local People Taking Care of Local People”, because local is what works.
